541a_sm.jpgMultiple Production 4WD Australian Class Champion Les Siviour will be making a return to the sport at the MTQ Engine Systems Griffith 700 this coming weekend.

Les will be accompanied on the 700km journey by youngest daughter Katie, wife of the current Australian Off Road Champion, Shannon Rentsch.

Les started racing back in 1983 at Waikerie when he took wife Jan’s shopping car, barred it out, got rid of the baby seats and raced it. The rest as they say is history.

He raced Nissan Patrols for 19 years, winning the Production 4WD Championship 16 times, and the Australian Off Road Championship in 1985. Nissan and Bridgestone sponsored Les for all the years he raced along with Lovells Springs, Koni Shocks, Aussie Bull Bars, Rally Speed, Finer Filter and Brown Davis were also long time supporters.

Les retired from full time competition back in 2003, but returned to tackle the Griffith course in 2005 when he raced the Nissan Patrol, but that attempt was short lived when he broke an input shaft in the first 20km of the event.

Well know amongst the off road racing community, Les is now a grandfather twice over and has decided to bring the Patrol out of the shed and race it again at the MTQ Engine Systems Griffith 700.

Les is taking the 541b_sm.jpgwait and see attitude towards the rest of the championship. If he does well this weekend he will look at competing in the last two rounds of Australian Off Road Championship at Millicent and Goondiwindi.

To say that Les has missed racing would be understatement but he has still kept himself involved by attending a lot of the Australian Off Road Championship rounds and supporting son in law Shannon Rentsch and his father Ian in their plight to win the Championship over the last few years.

Andy Ryan, also a son in law, will be debuting his new ProLite Saber buggy at the MTQ Engine Systems Griffith 700, and like Shannon will be a mission.

With the track marking complete, the pits enlarged and speedway area tidied up, Les was able to unearth the Patrol from the back of the shed last weekend, where it has sat for the last 5 years looking dejected, covered in dust and plenty of red backs breeding in it. Mark Pianco, long time Pit Crew Member, Engineer and able to do whatever needs doing, will be out to help prepare the Patrol.

T541c_sm.jpghe crew have had the Motec fixed after a spike, cleaned the fuel injectors, fixed the broken throttle sensor wire, fitted new tyres and given the Patrol a spit and polish and it’s now ready to go racing.

The MTQ Engine Systems Griffith 700 is shaping up to be an exciting event. The format of the race will put another dimension on the championship. The endurance style racing has vanished from the off road racing scene over the years with this year’s Griffith event reminiscent of the Bridgestone International at Kempsey except the track is more open and nowhere near as rough. When the lights go green at 7.30 am on Sunday it will be all systems go, to see who can complete the 8 laps in the fastest time.
