Crowes confident for Griffith PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 22 July 2010
crowe3_sm.jpg The family based two car Southern Highland Wines Runamuk race team head to the picturesque Riverina town of Griffith with a big bag of confidence, competing this weekend at the MTQ Engine Systems Griffith 700; round three of the Australian off Road Championship.

After a disappointing result at round two – the Tattersall’s Finke Desert Race - Mittagong’s Buddy and Kerry Crowe are looking to make good. Qualifying well and with a strong run into Finke, their return sector was cut short with a broken wheel, ending their assault on the iconic race.

“The front left wheel came clean off 50km up the track, we put the spare on but the hub was smashed and we had no brakes; all we could do was limp home,” said Buddy.

crowe2_sm.jpg Since then Todd Gleeson and his team have been burning the midnight oil prepping not only the 6Lt V8 Chevy Jimco Champion Pro Buggy of Buddy and Kerry’s but also the 1.3Lt Suzuki Sportsman Buggy, for their pride to drive; daughter Alisha and son Buddy Jnr.

Aptly named “The Pup” the little Sportsman buggy has been stripped and checked since their last run at Colo – a State round in February – where Alisha finished fourth outright and racing in the junior category, Buddy Jnr finished third outright.

Alisha’s preparations for Griffith were altered having to spend more than a week in hospital following a non racing related incident; she has now been given the “all clear” and is chomping at the bit stating “Nothing was going to stop me from meeting the green light on Saturday.”

crowe_sm.jpg The Jimco Champion has been on the dyno, Todd Gleeson making a few tweaks and a little fine tuning and now the Southern Highland Wines Pro Buggy is fully prepped for the non-stop 700km race. Buddy is looking forward to the endurance format, unique to this round; owning and operating AB Crowe Heavy Haulage is set to serve him well.

“Considering what I do for a living it won’t worry me, I can sit and drive for hours and hours. I’ve been driving long distance for 30 years; I’m looking forward to a real challenge.”

You can meet the Runamuk race team at the Griffith Showgrounds, 4 - 8pm during scrutiny on Friday night and if you’re not lucky enough to be in Griffith to watch the team in action you can follow the team’s progress on offroadracing.com.au all weekend.
