Sea Lake - Grassroots to National
Thursday, 26 January 2012
Following is a statement from the Sea Lake Off Road Club, organising club for Round 1 of the 2012 Australian Off Road Championship.

The Sea Lake Off Road Club (SLORC) is pleased and excited to be hosting Round 1 of the 2012 Australian Off Road Championship.

On the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend in June, 2012, the Sea Lake Mallee Rally celebrates its 39th year of off road racing. This is a tremendous milestone that the club is very proud of and holds close to their hearts.

The decision for the club to submit an Expression of Interest for the 2012 AORC was nothing new to them. It has been discussed year after year after year. The SLORC used to host the AORC until 1999. Since then we have soldiered on and supplied competitors and crews with an enjoyable weekend of motorsport and had some impressive entry lists, both in number of competitors and quality fields.

When the 2012 calendar was released we saw an opportunity for the AORC to return to Sea Lake. We submitted an Expression of Interest, which was accepted by AORCom, and we have now begun preparations to accommodate the AORC alongside the VORC.

The ‘theme’ for the 2012 Mallee Rally is “Grassroots to National” and we want to promote our down to earth attitude and passion for hosting an event where racers just want to go racing.

We are in the process of looking at accommodation options; if you require help with this please do not hesitate to contact us. Once a comprehensive list has been compiled it will be posted on websites for your benefit. If you have previously attended the Sea Lake Mallee Rally either as a competitor or crew member you will remember that we are here to help. If you are new to our event, please ask.

SLORC runs a well organised, punctual, relaxed and fun but challenging event for all involved, whether you’re a VORC or an AORC competitor you can be assured that you will be treated in the same respectful manner as you would expect.

All competitors, crews and families are invited to join us for a fantastic weekend of motorsport. Wherever you chose to race, we hope, come the Long Weekend in June, you are safe and successful at the feat you are trying to achieve.

The following is taken from the Australian Off-Road Year Book 1983/84 and is a personal history of Australian off-road racing by Wayne Cantell (courtesy of Chevron Publishing).

“….because of its nature, off-road racing will always offer real budget competition to many. While the lucky few at the top will experience the professionalism which comes with a growing dollar commitment, off-road racing will always survive on the great number of competitors who have very little money, but a hell of a lot of enthusiasm.”

Let’s get back to the roots of our sport and just go racing!!
