The 2012 Mellool Short Course has been run and won with Glenn Owen and Griffiths’ Matt Ryan coming home victors in the #30 Jimco in a strong field of 28 competitors from across Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.

1249b_sm Saturday’s racing was the first chance for southern Australian’s to have their first kick out for 2012 with Glenn Owen stamping his intentions on the 2012 season. Perfect weather and track conditions made for a great start to 2012 with crews tacking ten laps of the 15km course.

Mildura’s Matt Ryan and Ken Thompson just missed out on their hat trick of Mellool/Tyrrell Downs events in the #184 Southern Cross, taking home the second outright silverware. Chris and Daniel Monk #450 flew the flag for the locals securing third outright.

Travis and Gary Conrad #206 chalked up their first Super 1650 class win, banking valuable Mallee Shield points for their 2012 campaign. It was a comforting sight to have the Conrad family sheltered in support from their off road family after their recent tragic loss of daughter and navigator Gill.

1249c_sm Craig Button #469 rounded out the top five, also securing second in Extreme 2WD class. Taylor and Jason Hannig #212 drove into sixth outright and second in class with Ian Edelsten #191 the first ProLite home. Off road stalwart Reg Owen with trusty sidekick Russell Cairns #890 added to their trophy cabinet with first in Extreme 4WD class and eighth outright. Dean and Brad Miller #408 ended the day in ninth outright with Brett Price and Glenn Twite driving into the top 10 in the first outing of the #227 machine.

Thirteen competitors completed full race distance with #217 David McGrath and Mark Razanji in 11th in the ex Daryl Smith Rivmasta, #490 Lindsay Oliver and Sam Bowles in 12th and #319 John Sullivan in 13th.

1249d_sm Ken Holt in the #258 Super 1650 cracked the alternator, resulting in a damaged radiator early in the days racing. Mick Hannan #149 succumbed to rear arm failure while Gary Davis #133 had a wheel part company with the ProLite buggy.

Andy Ryan #131 had CV assembly issues and after much deliberation by many experts the incorrectly fitted cages were refitted with the Saber Racer going out to clock up five extremely quick lap time.
