Darren Payne and Kerri Wallace have crossed the Tasman to snatch the $3,000 prize pool from Portland’s favourite father and son team of Peter and Jake Stevenson at today’s running of the Havestco King of the Dunes.

Payne’s victory by a mere 45 seconds has made the long haul across the sea to experience the other side of sand racing well worthwhile. Payne, a legend of the Tasmanian St Helens Sand Dunes, commented at the start of the second section today that the course and the sand here are very different from Tasmania. “I’m really enjoying the wide open flowing nature of the course.”

The Havechat Stevenson team pushed the Super 1650 Rivmasta hard, keeping pace with the Payne ProLite, but in the end unable to reel in the 45 second gap.

A supreme effort by the Extreme 4WD team of Sandy Bowman and Daniel Hardman to bring the Nissan Patrol home in the third outright. Bowman exclaimed at the end of the race “best fun I’ve ever had off road racing, ever. The start and being able to race wheel to wheel all day, was an absolute buzz.”

More to come…
