The Kingston based team of Andy Murdoch and Harry Lyon have tamed the Mumbannar track, driving the #475 Extreme 2WD Richard Bennet Truck into first outright for Sunday’s competition.

Murdoch is relatively new to the sport and has now enjoyed one of the great highs off road racing can offer, an event win. The team is no stranger to the lows of sports that are all too well known to the seasoned campaigner, the #475 rolling at last year Finke Desert Race. If persistence is the key, the team has that in droves, overcoming a wheel bearing failure on the trailer on the way to Mumbannar.

Second on the podium was Shaun Klingberg and Matthew Salt in the Sportsman #385 with Peter and Katie Tamblyn rounding out the top three in the #242 machine.

A few showers throughout the day settled the dust and made for perfect track conditions, although slightly uncomfortable for those without windscreens.

The #34 Southern Cross racer of Ian Fish and Brenton Clarke was leading the field until a small engine fire in the first section ended their outright contention, but went onto continue racing.

The father and son team of Murray and Jake England were running in second outright, but gear selection issues pushed them down the order, while Lady Luck has eluded Mark Hannaford and the new #137 drive, the team losing a back wheel at Mumbannar on the back of an electoral miss fire at Mannum the weekend before.

More details to come.
