The Retreat... Ready and Waiting
Wednesday, 16 May 2012
Mackay Off Road Racing Club is gearing up for its biggest challenge yet, with their first ever Queensland Off Road Championship round, The Opposite Lock Mackay Retreat 200, coming up the last weekend of June, Saturday 30th – Sunday 1st July.

1350b_sm “We have been working towards this for over a year” said Club President Errol Younger. “Our races have been getting bigger and bigger and we have been getting a lot of positive feedback from the teams who have been coming from down south for a look. We are really lucky to have to support of the property owner, and Polaris racers, Brian and Kate Moohin at the Retreat Station. Brian and his helpers are really working on this track all year, trying to keep it in good condition and constantly improving it.”

The track for this event will be 27km, and will have something for everyone, including an open paddock section, gullies and jumps. Extensive work has been carried out to widen and straighten sections of the track to make room for the bigger machines. “We have also tried to keep down the cost of event entry for the teams. We feel that they are all putting in a big effort driving up to us, and with the cost of fuel we wanted to make the race affordable”. The nomination fee for this race will be $270.

1350c_sm The club have been using this property, situated approximately 65km from Mackay on the Peak Downs Highway, for their races for four years. The venue also has toilet and shower facilities, built by the Pioneer Endurance Club, and kindly lent to the club for events.

“We are also really lucky to have a hotel outside the front gate!” says Younger. “Although the Retreat Hotel is not affiliated with the club or the Retreat Station, they are avid supporters of the sport and provide entertainment at the pub of an evening. Meals and a cold beer are also welcome after a long day of eating dust. There is also cabin accommodation available at the Retreat Hotel, but those who don’t want to rough it should get in quick.”

Event organizers are expecting a large turnout, with many teams keen to get some racing done after event cancellations earlier in the year. Everything from the big V8 powered buggies, the smaller Super 1650 and ProLite, modified Extreme 4WDs, Polaris 900 RZR and production class vehicles will be out to score a trophy over the weekend.

1350d_sm Expected entries include, trekking form the north of the state, Talbot Cox in his V8 powered Kadco Pro buggy and Robert Turner in the Lexus V8 powered Predator buggy. They will be up against local teams, including Steve Gates in this Extreme 2WD Holden V8 powered Strange Rover, in Super 1650 class Chris Colborne in his VQ35 powered Jimco, Brock and Adele Sievers in their Extreme 4WD Hilux, and supporting the newly created UTV class with Polaris 900RZR’s will be Brian Moohin, Graham Moohin, Wayne Bussey, Andrew North, and Peter Moohin.

Spectators will also be there in force at this family event, with plenty of action viewable from the paddock where the first section of the track winds through, over jumps and through bushland. As always spectator event entry and camping are free, and racing will start at 7.30am on Saturday and Sunday. Scrutiny and reconnaissance laps will be done on Friday afternoon with pre scrutiny recommended if possible.

Also on site will be sponsors of the event Opposite Lock Mackay with their tent full of 4WD and racing gear, and knowledgeable staff to help out any one from the amateur to the seasoned pros.

“Opposite Lock Mackay have been fantastic sponsors of ours for the last three years” commented Younger. “They are a locally owned business and they really are enthusiastic supporters of motorsport in the Mackay community.”
