It is the great unwritten rule in motor racing that to win you need power, and plenty of it. Nothing beats having lots of grunt on tap when your aim is to visit victory circle, or so the saying goes. Try telling that to long time racer Gary Hyde, who won the 2011 Scotts Hydraulic Services Wittitrin 300 outright in his 1300cc Sportsman Buggy.

1358b_sm Hyde, with son Joshua in the navigator seat, surprised many by claiming the first every outright win in a New South Wales Off Road Championship Round in a Sportsman Buggy.

But it wasn’t easy for Hyde, who had to work extremely hard to get the victory. While more fancied teams faltered all around him Hyde kept his head down, and crossed the 2011 finish line after almost 6 hours of racing, tired and dirty, but jubilant as well.

A member of the Kempsey Macleay Off Road Club, Hyde has been around the sport a long time. His buggy is always well prepared, and it needs to be, as the Sportsman class has been highly competitive for several years.

1358c_sm Hyde is heading back to Wittitrin on May 26 and 27 looking for a repeat outright victory in the 2012 race, this time with Gary Sullivan in the navigators seat.

Whether that is achievable remains to be seen, but one thing is certain, Hyde will be ringing every last ounce of horsepower out of his 1300cc engine in an effort to make it happen.
