Revved up for the Dunes
Thursday, 21 February 2013
With Aus #1 heading the nomination list of 30 plus competitors for this weekend’s Harvestco King of the Dunes, the scene is set for a weekend of hot wheel to wheel off road racing at the 2013 Victorian season opener.

“I love racing at Portland; you get a dust free run and the mass start is just awesome” commented Matt Hanson Aus #1. “It is definitely the SMU team’s favourite event; we all enjoy the atmosphere and this will be the first time we’ve raced the #1 Jimco at Portland. Previously we’ve campaigned the Super 1650 in the dunes, so this year will be very exciting.”

Hanson will be up against some stiff competition with fellow sand specialists Ian Fish #34, Rod Visser #157, Peter Stevenson #248 and Dean Williams #357 all looking to take home the $2,000 prize money for an outright win.

Sandy Bowman had his first attempt at sand racing at last year’s event and commented at the time that it was the most fun he’d ever had off road racing. Bowman will be back this year in the Chev powered Nissan Patrol #834 with Daniel Hardmen in the navigator’s seat.

With racing not starting in South Australia for a few more weeks, the Harvestco King of the Dunes has attracted a strong South Aussie field itching to get back into the seat of their off road machines. Ivan Schmocker and Wayne Evans will be giving their new drive, the Element Racing #56 previously campaigned by Carl Haby, its first run under the Schmocker Racing banner, while Darryl Nissan and Andrew Harness will also travel from their South Australia base to test their wits in the Victoria sand in the #164 Sore Buggy.

1728b_sm “We’ve done some minor engine and gearbox tweaking ready for this year’s racing” commented Ivan Schmocker. “We went to Portland two years ago and had an absolute ball. We’ll be looking to learn from the guys that have the sand experience, but it will just be great to get some miles under the belt with the new car.”

Terry and Lisa Morice have crossed the Tasman with the #477 Hulcar Extreme 2WD in tow, stepping out of their Tasmanian comfort zone to take on the Swan Lake Discovery Bay Coastal Park dunes. With last year’s winner Darren Payne taking the coveted trophy back to Tasmania the locals will be doing all they can to keep the 2013 Harvestco King of the Dunes trophy on the mainland.

The forecast for Saturday’s racing is in the mid-thirties and with twenty laps of the 10km course scheduled, it will be hot racing all round. The event will be split into two races, each of 10 laps, totalling 200km in race distance, with the main feature, the mass starts. The nature of the dunes and track allows for the most spectacular of mass starts as the mix of off road machines heads off to the horizon.

Racing gets underway at 11am on Saturday with race one, followed by race two at 2pm and with entries open until Saturday morning, there’s still time to nominate to race; just advise the Portland Dune Buggy Club of your intentions.

“We’d like to thank our major sponsor Harvestco for their ongoing support of the event” added Matthew Salt, event organisers.

An added bonus for those unable to attend the event will be the LIVE streaming of race results via offroadracing.com.au direct from the dunes (dependent on mobile broadband network availability). "The plan for 2013 is to LIVE stream results data from each event where we are providing our RaceSoft Scoring service" commented Julie Rogers. "However, this will be dependent on suitable mobile broadband network coverage."

The Portland Dune Buggy Club would also like to thank the following sponsors for the support of the 2013 Harvestco King of the Dunes:
Solahart  •  DTF Race Trailers  •  SMU Racing  •  Glenn Wells and Family  •  Glendarren Auto Panels  •  Fechner Engineering  •  Thorpes Engineering  •  PMD Race Products  •  Port City Engines  •  Portland Fasteners  •  Portland Disposals
