With only a few days to the first major race of the New South Wales off road season, Kempsey Macleay Off Road Club officials are in the final stages of ensuring everything is in place for a highly successful event.

The Jim Anderson Dozer Hire Dondingalong Off Road Challenge on 23-24 March is Round 1 of the New South Wales Off Road Championship, Round 1 of the East Coast Tri-Challenge and Round 1 of the Off Road Warehouse SCOR Masters.

“Dondingalong has hosted some spectacular racing the past few years, with plenty of wheel to wheel action that you don’t get to see a lot of in the longer races” said club Media Representative Rod Thurgood.

“Being only a couple of kilometres per lap, and with a format that see’s short distance, multi car heats, Dondingalong is the ideal venue to showcase the sport”.

“The natural terrain gives ample passing opportunities, and the public can view half the circuit from the spectator area”.

A strong field has entered, including good numbers in the popular Utility Terrain Vehicle class” Thurgood said.

Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs) are closely based on the small machines you may see being used as a workhorse on farms, although the race versions are highly modified for safety reasons.

“With engines only 900cc in size, the UTVs are the pocket rockets of off road racing. The drivers really push their vehicles to the limit, and it would not surprise me to see one or two of the teams that have entered pressing for outright honours” Thurgood said.

“Wayne Murphy in the Snake Racing Polaris was extremely competitive last year, and he is back again in 2013. With a full year of development behind the team, and plenty of seat time, I expect the #666 Polaris to be a big threat by race end”.

While the Jim Anderson Dozer Hire Dondingalong Off Road Challenge kick starts the eight round New South Wales Off Road Championship, there is a new series within the series, running in conjunction with the races conducted on short course tracks.

The Off Road Warehouse Short Course Off Road Masters encompasses the four rounds of the New South Wales Off Road Championship being held at Dondingalong, Crookwell in southern New South Wales, Nabiac near Taree, and Colo just outside Sydney.

“The ORW SCOR Masters is designed to put the fun back into short course racing, and offer teams a financially viable alternative to pursuing the entire New South Wales Off Road Championship” Thurgood said.

“This is the first year of the ORW SCOR Masters and the Series is sure to get a strong following as it evolves”.
