Mellool is the place to be this weekend for those competitors getting down to business and chasing Victorian Mallee Shield points.

The opening round of the highly coveted Mallee Shield has to date attracted 15 keen competitors, but with nominations open until Saturday, the organisers are expecting numbers in the low twenties.

Topping the list of favourites would have to be last year’s third place getters and previous event winners Chris and Daniel Monk in their wicked looking Extreme 2WD #460 machine. Home turf advantage might play a part with Dad and Mum, Murray and Helen Monk, the track property owners.

Although sure to be snapping at the heels of the brothers Monk will be the Hall Brothers Racing Extreme 4WD of Luke Hall and Scott Sage. Relative newcomers to the sport, this team has put down some impressive results since debuting into off road, their most recent success, a podium finish at the Harvestco Portland Sand Enduro in February.

Another team not to be discounted is the single seat Pro Lite machine of Rod Visser; the #157 taking outright victory at the last event on the 2012 Tasmanian Off Road Championship circuit. Nik and Viv Simmonds will be debuting their recent purchase, the ex Andy Ryan Saber Racing #113 along with Daniel Maybery and Mathew Burns having their first run in the ex Middlemiss #277 Super 1650 machine.

Son and Father team Travis and Gary Conrad are also sure to be running at the front of the field, the team renowned for preparation and consistency in the #206 machine, finished fourth at the 2012 event. Bernie Clohesy and Kim Stacy are another team with the checkered flag within grasp, the Performance 2WD #501 Triton having its first outing since taking out the Australian Off Road Performance 2WD Class Championship last year.

Regulars on the Mallee Shield circuit, Craig Button and David Anderson will be looking to improve on their top five 2012 finish.

Mellool is just over the border on the New South Wales side. Racing will be split into three sections, with competitors taking on ten laps of the 15km course.

The Saturday only race will have a BBQ and presentation at the completion of proceedings. Camping is available at the track, but with minimal facilities.
