Rally Australia Off Road – Update 3
Friday, 22 March 2013
Communique from John Paterson, Clerk of Course for Rally Australia - Off Road

  • My trip to Coffs in late February was both successful and disastrous.
  • Much time was spent planning and discussing logistical matters that included communications, traffic management, scrutiny venue, and a ‘stadium style’ off road demonstration in the centre of Coffs, at the Rally Hub - where the World Rally Cars will also be inaction! Plans to meet with people at Kempsey and Grafton however, had to be aborted due to blocked roads and flooding rains. It was also impossible to do any further survey work on the course as well, so I am heading back to Coffs on the weekend after Hyden.
  • I did meet up with Adam and Bronwyn from HP Sports Management however, and it was evident they are very committed to both improving and promoting the AORC.
  • The task of finalising agreements with the landowners adjacent to the forest we are using is progressing - and I hope to finalise our course on the next visit. When this is done, I'll post a map of the course soon after.
  • In April I’m off to Brisbane and the grand plan in all of this is to build some relationships between Brisbane, Coffs, Grafton and Kempsey in order to grow the next generation of officials and to nurture co-operation between these clubs and organisations. And if I can get some experienced officials out of Brisbane as well; - that will be a bonus! The Brisbane meeting is at the BSCC HQ, 2.00pm Saturday, April 27.
  • You might also have noticed a different logo for our event and yes; - there is a slight name change as well. As the logo suggests, we are to be called Rally Australia Off Road, Round 4 etc; - and hopefully a name sponsor will head this up some time soon.
  • I’m also delighted to announce I have found a Deputy, who is local, knows the terrain intimately, and has a broad knowledge of the challenges involved in running an event. Brendan Ireland runs his own mechanical business at Coffs and whilst most of his significant experience is in rallying, including the 2011 WRC, the move across to the “good side” should be seamless and I hope to have him fully accredited with a CAMS Event Command licence in the next couple of months.
  • Looking to Hyden, I'm planning to catch up with those who will be entering Coffs and to discuss the off road promotion/demonstration planned for there in September.

170 odd days to go,
