Koorlong Ready to Roll
Friday, 17 May 2013
Racing returns to Koorlong on the outskirts of Mildura tomorrow with the running of the Koorlong Kruz. The Mallee Shield event has attracted a field nudging twenty, converging on the Sunraysia city from across three states.

Travelling from Sydney is the father son team of David and Matthew Nikiforoff, taking to the Koorlong track for the first time. The Nikiforoff family are well known in New South Wales with young Matthew a font of knowledge for all things off road. Matthew has recently turned 12 and now old enough to navigate in multiclub events, in all states other than New South Wales; hence the families recent trips to Mumbannar, Avalon and now Koorlong.

The Nikiforoff’s will be up against two tough local competitors in Super 1650 class with Ken Philp steering the team’s #211 machine and Tanner James, son of former ProLite Class champion Aaron James in the Jamesprint #228 Super 1650.

Crossing the border from the other direction, South Australia, is James Copeland #26 going head to head with John Hederic #45; this has all the makings for some spectacular racing.

The ProLite field is strong with local favourite and multiple time Koorlong outright winner Matt Ryan #184 to be the one to chase. Brett Smith #161 has trekked his Southern Cross from Melbourne hoping for a better run after kissing a fence post and taking out the rear wheel at the recent Richard Bennett Memorial Enduro at Parilla. Ross Doering #170 and Terry Kelly #137 will be making the most of their inside track knowledge along with the Sportsman of #313 Glen Hollis up against #359 Andrew Djeric for class results.

The South Australian based Reid family are have two cars on the transporter heading to Mildura with Dad Kim in the #121 ProLite and Son Kurt in the #521 machine.

Another battle will be the Extreme 2WD class with seasoned campaigners John Schultz #455 and Craig Button #469 going head to head for class points. Geoff Lampard is making his return to off road racing after a long break, recently taking possession of the ex Coby Pearce racer.

The one day event goes green at 11am Saturday when the field will complete ten laps of the 15km course and with the few mills of rain received in the last few days, conditions look good for a day of off road racing.
