Uncertain times for the team at Simpson Racing. The team’s plans have dramatically changed in the last 48 hours with the wild fires currently engulfing New South Wales putting the teams Australian Off Road Championship title chase hopes in doubt.

As at the time of writing, Garry Simpson and family are in a position like many others across New South Wales; where their homes and livelihoods are being threatened by wildfires.

2226b_sm Simpson explained earlier today “the Alumi Craft was in bits in the workshop, being prepared for next weekend. Everything was on track for Amanda and I to leave for Lockyer Valley on Thursday next week. Unfortunately, when we came under the threat of fire, I just threw it all into the car transporter with whatever possessions from the house we could fit in, even the dog food and bowl. The fires came within a kilometer of our place on both sides yesterday and we were ready to evacuate.”

Simpson continued “at the moment we’re leaving the race transporter packed, just in case the fires turn and we need to leave. Also, as you can image, I can’t leave the family to go racing if the fires aren’t under control.”

“The other small delay that we have is that Gerald Reid of Springwood Car Care was also doing some of our car preparation. Gerald was on track to have it finished on time, but this was all turned upside down for him yesterday when he had to leave work to defend his home against the fire storm. Thankfully he succeeded and saved his house and shed. I owe the reliability of the Alumi Craft mostly to Gerald; his help and knowledge has been invaluable.”

With the odds stacked against the Simpson Racing team being able to compete at next weekend’s TJM Pro Locker – Lockyer 300, the fifth and final round of the Australian Off Road Championship, they are doing their utmost to front the start lights at Mulgowie and bank enough Championship points to give the team the #101 plate which, to date, has eluded them.
