Australian off road racing has seen many changes through the years, but one constant is the brand Southern Cross Racing and their place on the Sea Lake Mallee Rally competitor list.

2014 will mark the 40th anniversary for Southern Cross Racing at the MBL Sea Lake Mallee Rally ARB 350.

Brett Smith explains “well what an achievement. This year will be Southern Cross Racing’s 40th year attending the Sea Lake Malle Rally.”

2493b_sm Southern Cross Racing Frames founder Bob Strawbridge may have retired from the driver’s seat, but not for building buggies or attending events. He’d never miss a Mallee Rally. Bob will be taking up the role of Pit Manger for son Brett as he continues with his love of the sport.

Over the years Southern Cross Racing Frames have produced in excess of 500 buggies. “Bob always keeps an eye out for any of the 500 plus Southern Cross Racing buggies he has built and likes to support them where he can” Brett continued.

Brett will be campaigning his Southern Cross Mark 5 at this year’s MBL Sea Lake Mallee Rally ARB 350 and will be pushing for a strong finish to continue the family tradition. Bob, who has previously had two second outright finishes at Sea Lake, along with many other podium places over the 40 year period, is set to enjoy supporting and guiding the team from his new role at Pit Manager.

It has been a busy year for the Southern Cross Racing team, with a new Mark 5 leaving the workshop floor in April and second one due to be completed in June. Adding to that, the new Next Gen that’s under construction for Brett, and it’s all steam ahead at Southern Cross Racing. “My new Next Gen is coming along nicely, albeit behind closed doors. I can’t wait till later this year when it’s due to be finished and we can hit the track”.

Brett, Bob and the Smith and Strawbridge families look forward to catching up with the off road community at Sea Lake. “We always enjoy the company, the hospitality and love the racing; there’s nothing else like it.”
