Sea Lake on a Hat Trick
Thursday, 04 June 2015
In its 42 year history, only one driver has taken out a hat trick of Sea Lake Mallee Rally wins, and he did it not once, but twice. Craig Martin scored his first trifecta in 1980, 81 and 82, backing it up with four in a row from 1985 through to 1988.

Two other teams have come close with Gary Baker scoring back to back Mallee Rally victories in 1975-76 and Jamie Robinson in 1996-97. Glenn Owen sits on the cusp of writing his name in the Sea Lake Mallee Rally hat trick record book, needing an outright win this weekend to add to his 2013-14 wins. Owen will have to keep his eye on the prize if he’s to join Martin on a hat trick of Sea Lake victories.

The 2015 MBL Sea Lake Mallee Rally ARB 350 has attracted a strong field of 99 teams from across the eastern states, including five teams from Tasmania and five teams from Queensland.

As the third round of the Victorian Off Road Championship and the second round of the ARB Off Road Racing Series, both hotly contested competitions in their own right, the battle will be on come Saturday’s prologue to secure the all-important pole position, placing teams in the box seat to bank maximum points towards their 2015 campaigns.

Dale Martin #133 is the highest placed Victorian Off Road Championship entry, currently on 90 points behind Aaron James and Ian Fish, both on 100 points, so a good showing this weekend will boost him up the ladder.  However, also on 90 points after his second outright finish at the Harvestco King of the Dunes is Tasmanian Scott Rockliff; the pair sitting just 10 points ahead of Andrew McClelland #131 and Daryl Nissen #164 on 80 points.  It has all the makings of a tought battle around Lake Tyrrell for Victorian Off Road Championship leaderboard.

David Middlemiss #117 is the highest placed ARB Off Road Racing Series entry after a great points haul at the Harvestco King of the Dunes, his chosen WildCard event, and round one the ARB Griffith 400 sitting on 104.5 points. Marty Scott #96 is 14.5 points behind Middlemiss, also using Portland as his WildCard, while John Towers #27 on 84 points came out of round one with a second outright and near maximum points’ bank and still to capitalise on his WildCard Event.

Misty rain has blown over Sea Lake today, however, it is expected to have little to no effect on the near perfect track conditions. There will a touch of dust in some parts of the track and the forecasted 20degree days should make for a comfortable weekend of off road racing for both competitors and spectators alike.

The MBL Sea Lake Mallee Rally ARB 350 race proper goes green on Sunday 7th June at 9:30 when Lake Tyrrell will rumble to the vibration of the off road machines. Live results and live streaming of the track PA will also be available throughout the weekend via
