Burdekin 30th Anniversary
Wednesday, 10 May 2017
The North Queensland based Burdekin Offroaders’ Club celebrate a milestone in the clubs history this weekend; their 30th anniversary. With entries open until noon on Friday for the annual Burdekin Long Course event, at the time of publishing, 25 teams have nominated for the landmark event. As the longest running club in North Queensland, the members have put in an extra effort for the anniversary event.

Michael Marson, club representative added, “the club members are very proud to have reached our 30th anniversary. Over the years, there has been many people who have put in countless hours to manage the club and the events. We would love for any previous competitors or club members to come on out to Burdekin this weekend and help us celebrate.”

The celebrations will kick off at 3pm to 8pm on Friday with a static display including documentation and scrutiny (4pm to 6pm) at Burdekin Motors Group in the main street of Ayr apposite the Burdekin Hotel and KFC.

The 6km prologue goes green at 8:30am on Saturday when the teams will battle it out to secure pole position for the race proper. Saturday’s racing commences at 11am with seven laps of the 21km course over three heats on the schedule.

Sunday will see a further four laps totalling 231kms of Burdekin off road racing.

The Burdekin Long Course also sees the implementation of North Queensland’s new timing system. Michael Marson explains “the Mackay Off Road clubworked hard to get a grant last year to invest in electronic timing equipment. However, we didn’t have the experience or expertise up here to feel confident to implement it. We are very excited that Murray and Julie Rogers of offroadracing.com.au and RaceTime, who have extensive experience in both timing and using transponder based systems, have kindly accepted our invitation to come up and help us to set up and implement our system.”

Off road racing is on an upward trend in North Queensland, and with 10 SuperLites entered for Burdekin, across both A and B classes, along with a very strong Pro, ProLite and Super 1650 class. Waylon Jaggard is the sole contender in the new SportsLite class and fresh from his trip south to St George two weeks ago.

With perfect weather forecast, the track and venue are marked and staged, the spectator point set up for some great arena viewing, making for a top weekend of Burdekin off road racing.
