Justin Guy with Dan Bennet and Lachlan Davies sharing the navigating duties have finished their 2017 off road season on a high, taking outright honours at the Ray Vesty Memorial Challenge at Colo Park on Sunday. Crossing the line with just a 3 second gap to second place, Guy let it be known from that start that he was there to win.

With his first lap time 24 seconds faster than his closest rival, from then on Guy kept the chasing pack behind him. Dan McKenzie and Irene Keramidas in the #6651 Yamaha YZ secured second place on the podium and first in SuperLite A class with Justin Chisholm and Angela Hoffman campaigning the #6628 Yamaha YZ rounding out the podium.

Glenn Hoffman #18 was 6 seconds off the pace of Chisholm to slot into fourth outright and second in Pro class while Scott Brown and Karina Yates, for her first attempt in the navigators seat, drove the #211 Super 1650 into fifth place and first in class, saluting the checkered flag 12 seconds behind Hoffman.

Mother Nature offered up some pre event rain, saving the Club from having to use the water truck to dampen the track. A further rainstorm on Saturday evening added enough moisture to the course to ensure an almost dust free race day.

In the first heat of the day, near the beginning of the third lap, the single seat ProLite of Phil Page #148 rolled on a corner, bringing a halt to his racing for the weekend. After a delay in proceedings, racing recommenced. Close racing was the order of the day, with some great battles throughout the field in most of the classes.

Ian Kraaij and Devillers Duvenage in the #40 Pro buggy clipped a tree with the right hand rear wheel, bending it enough to put him out for the rest of the day. David Towers, driving the #80 machine with Glenn Towers in the navigator’s seat, had to withdraw after the first race due to illness. #6698 Matthew Wyndham had reoccurring electrical and fuel problems, moving him down the order. Nathan Chivers and Scott O’Connor in the Can-Am #676 missed the last race with clutch problems.

Scott and Ella Muma had their new V8 powered BAT Pro Buggy #22 out for its maiden run; a very different machine to the older rotary car #1020. Muma was coming to grips with the differences, only to stop on the second lap of the second heat; he fixed the issue and was back out there to complete the last heat for the day.

Mathew Nikiforoff and Nicole Lennox #1090 took home the SportLite trophy while Gavin Sheppard and John Blackett #333 were the winners in Sportsman class and sixth outright. Daniel Jandera and Trevor Pirini #308 took out second in Sportsman class while Daniel Nikiforoff and Karl Neil #390 bought home third.

Penni Ramsay and Olivia Nikiforoff #247 took second in Super 1650 class behind Scott Brown. The SuperLite B first place trophy went to Nathan Chivers and Angela Hoffman #676. Mark-Paul Grant and Daniel Fittler #416 bought the OZ Truck home to take the Extreme 2WD class win and also took home the Ray Vesty Memorial trophy. This Ray Vesty Memorial Award is an encouragement award, given to the midfield runner.

Sydney Off Road Racing Association’s first event for the 2018 season will be at Colo Park on the weekend of 24-25 February 2018 and would be the perfect opportunity for a shake down run to test all the off season work.

SORRA would like to thank all the officials and helpers for their efforts over the busy weekend of events. Saturday morning saw 20 people, young and old, participate in the Driver Training. After lunch the Khanacross ran with 30 entrants.
