Following a long and in-depth discussion, the members present at the Sunraysia Motorsports Club meeting last night made the hard decision to cancel the 2019 Sunraysia 400.

Gary McCarten, Club President explained “we discussed at length two pressing issues; competitor safety and preservation of Keera Station. To put it in context, Keera Station has had 15mm of rain since last year’s event; whereas the average annual rain fall is usually in excess of 200mm.”

“The land is like powder; there is no substance to it. We would need some decent rainfall between now and the event to make it possible, and unfortunately, there is none on the long range forecast. The members present felt an early decision was in the best interest of the competitors, the Championship, our Club and Keera Station.”

“As competitors we have all raced in dusty conditions; but to race on Keera Station as it is, with no rain on the horizon, would cause way too much damage to the already desolate and barren landscape that have resulted from the drought. It would not be a fun racing experience for anyone. To ensure the longevity of the Sunraysia off road event at Keera Station, we need to look at the big picture and give the conditions due respect”.

The Sunrayia Motorsports Club members are strong in their resolve to see the event come back bigger and stronger in 2020.

Gary McCarten continued “our date is flexible from year to year depending on Easter. For 2020 we are proposing to run the weekend after Easter which is 17-19 April. The committee and club members will now concentrate on planning for the 2020 Sunraysia event; stay tuned for regular updates throughout the year”.

The Sunraysia 400 was to be the opening round of the 2019 ARB Australian Off Road Racing Championship. That mantle is now bestowed upon the Sea Lake Mallee Rally to be held over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in early June.
