The long wait certainly didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the ARB Australian Off Road Racing Championship campaigners, with the 2019 Championship finally going green today at Stackpoole. Many teams rolled into the camp ground on Thursday, stretching out every last minute of the off road racing experience.

With the cancellation of Mildura and Sea Lake coupled with the ARB Town and Country Tyres Stackpoole 500 moving from March back to July, the opening round to the 2019 calendar has been met with a twofold excitement; teams were back on track and the Stackpoole property was covered in luscious green crops. It’s too early to say that the drought is in the rear view mirror, but it is a great start to the season for this region.

61 teams have travelled from far and wide to race an 85km track that is in near perfect race condition. Opening rains have turned the Stackpoole farm tracks into an off road racers dream track. Talbot Cox and Craig King topped the prologue time sheets and have maintained that momentum to be the overnight leaders heading into tomorrows 340km section. With 2 two laps under their belts and a further four laps on the cards for tomorrow, can Cox and King, the 2018 outright victors, take out back to back Stackpoole titles after a total race distance of 510km.

Brent Martin and Andre De Simone stormed through the field after an uncharacteristic 10th place in prologue to sit 2m25seconds behind Cox; the reigning ARB Australian Off Road Racing Champion on a mission to defend his hard fought 2018 title.

In a stellar effort locals Jason and Kristy Richard hold onto third place, a mere 1.46seconds behind Martin.

It’s been a long day for some with a 14 strong DNF list. The pits are a hive of activity as teams pull out the stops to fix and prepare their machines for tomorrows assault on the red dirt of Stackpoole.

Saturday Results can be found here.
